FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Kansas City, Kan., Dec. 30, 2010) - EPA has awarded $485,000 to Garner, Iowa, for rehabilitation of its existing sanitary sewer system. The project is expected to be completed by the spring of 2011.

EPA Region 7 Administrator Karl Brooks said, “Garner, like many smaller Iowa communities, needs to keep upgrading its vital water infrastructure. Not only do improved sewer systems support economic growth, they are important ways of meeting public health needs while protecting our natural environment.”

The construction project includes replacing undersized sanitary sewers and rehabilitating existing manholes. An existing 12-inch sanitary sewer will be replaced with 2,650 feet of new 24-inch sewer pipe.

EPA oversees the protection of water quality and public health. The Agency is working with community leaders and the public to meet the growing needs and demands of our limited water resources. EPA remains committed to developing innovative and sustainable solutions for managing and financing infrastructure with public and private partners.
