EPA to Hold Public Meeting Regarding Columbia Organic Chemical Company in Columbia, South Carolina

(Atlanta, Ga. – April 10, 2008) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold a public meeting Tuesday, April 15, 2008 regarding the status of the Columbia Organic Chemical Company (COCC) Site in Columbia, S.C. EPA and South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) officials will provide information and answer questions about the EPA cleanup underway at the site.

The public meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Greenlawn Baptist Church, 6612 Garners Ferry Road in Columbia. Persons interested in obtaining additional information are encouraged to contact Sherryl A. Carbonaro, EPA Community Involvement Coordinator, at (678) 575-7355.

The COCC Site is located at 912 Drake Street in Columbia. The facility operated as a specialty chemical facility from 1944 until 1984, then relocated to the Cassatt community in Kershaw County, South Carolina. The site is a three acre property surrounded by a mixture of residential and commercial properties.

Attention: A press availability will be held at the Greenlawn Baptist Church, 6612 Garners Ferry Road, Columbia, SC at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15, 2008. EPA officials will be available to answer all media questions concerning the removal action in progress at the Site. This arrangement will allow for the public to use the entire public meeting to get information and have their questions answered.
