EPA SEEKS COMMENT ON PROPOSED CHEMICAL LIST
FOR WASTE MINIMIZATION EFFORT

EPA is seeking comment on a list of 53 persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) chemical categories that may be found in hazardous waste regulated by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). The list is expected to be published in the Federal Register on Monday, Nov. 9. The list will be used to promote voluntary waste minimization efforts that reduce the generation of PBT chemicals found in RCRA hazardous waste by 50 percent by 2005. EPA requests comment on this RCRA Waste Minimization PBT Chemical List by Jan. 8, 1999. PBT chemicals persist and remain toxic even after they are released into the environment and can pose long-term problems, even if released in small quantities. These chemicals are likely to accumulate in the environment and in the food chain, potentially causing long-term human health and environmental effects. These chemicals will be the focus of source reduction and recycling activities aimed at reducing their presence in hazardous waste. For more information, visit EPA’s website at: www.epa.gov/wastemin or call the RCRA Hotline at 1-800-424-9346 or 703-412-9810.
