EPA TO HOLD A PUBLIC MEETING REGARDING THE PROPOSED PLAN AT THE DURACELL/BATTERY TECH SUPERFUND SITE IN LEXINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public meeting to discuss the proposed plan at Operable Unit #2 at the Duracell/Battery Tech Superfund Site in Lexington, North Carolina on Thursday, July 11, 2002.

The public meeting will be held from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm at the Agricultural Center, 301 East Center Street in Lexington. EPA officials will discuss possible alternatives to treat contaminants in groundwater at the site, and respond to citizens concerns. All interested persons are encouraged to attend the meeting.

A thirty (30) day public comment period will begin on July 11, 2002 and end midnight August 10, 2002. During the comment period, EPA will accept comments pertaining to the proposed plan. Comments should be addressed to Ken Mallary, Remedial Project Manager, U.S. EPA Region 4, Waste Management Division, 11th Floor, 61 Forsyth Street, S.W., Atlanta, Georgia 30303.

The Duracell/Battery Tech site is an active battery manufacturing facility located at 305 New Highway 64 East on 26.5-acres. Based upon the extent of contamination, the site has been divided into two Operable Units for more efficient handling and cleanup. Operable Unit #1 will address soil and sediment contamination, while Operable Unit #2 will address groundwater contamination. The principle contaminants of concern include mercury and volatile organic compounds.
