EPA Orders Reamer Hill Water Association to Comply with Drinking Water Safeguards

(PHILADELPHIA – May 28, 2014) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has ordered Reamer Hill Water Association, Inc. in Kanawha County, W.Va. to comply with Safe Drinking Water Act standards at its public water system. Based on the most recently available data, the system provides drinking water to approximately 64 people in Clendenin. EPA issued the order to ensure safe drinking water for users of the system.
The Order requires the Reamer Hill Water Association to: secure the services of a qualified operator; comply with the regulatory requirements for sampling and analysis; prepare and deliver a consumer confidence report; and prepare and deliver a public notice for the violations identified in the order.
EPA’s Order, in consultation with the West Virginia Department of Health & Human Resources, was issued in part to ensure that the public serviced by the Association is aware of the violations, given the system’s failure to provide its customers with the required consumer confidence report for calendar year 2012, which was due July 1, 2013.
The Safe Drinking Water Act is the main federal law that ensures the safety of public drinking water supplies. Under this statute, EPA sets standards for drinking water quality and oversees the states, localities, and water suppliers who implement those standards. The law protects public drinking water and its sources: rivers, lakes, reservoirs, springs, and ground water wells.
