FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1996

EPA OFFICE OF COMPLIANCE RECEIVES "HAMMER" AWARD

EPA's Office of Compliance program for Compliance Assistance Centers Program will receive a National Performance Review (NPR) Hammer Award from Vice President Al Gore's office on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at an 11:30 a.m. ceremony at the Mid-Atlantic Finishing Inc. shop at 4656 Addison Rd. in Capital Heights, Md. NPR principles include: putting customers first; cutting red tape and empowering employees. Over 250 Hammer Awards have been presented to teams of federal employees, state and local employees and citizens who are working together to build a better government. The Hammer Award is being given to EPA's Office of Compliance for developing four national compliance assistance centers, which are part of the Clinton Administration's effort to reinvent environmental regulations. Reporters are invited to attend the ceremony, which will also mark the formal opening of the Metal Finishing Resource Center. The National Metal Finishing Resource Center is a joint effort between EPA and the Department of Commerce and is also supported by industry partners including: the National Center for Manufacturing Sciences; the National Association of Metal Finishers; the American Electroplaters and Surface Finishers Society; and the Metal Finishing Suppliers' Association. The Center is also supported by the National Roundtable of State Pollution Prevention Programs. The center will provide metal finishers with access to comprehensive information on regulatory compliance, pollution prevention opportunities, technologies and techniques. This information will enhance the international competitiveness of smaller manufacturers while reducing adverse effects on the environment. The center will provide an electronic information source through the World Wide Web at http://cai.eclipse.net/home2.htm. The three other national assistance centers are for agriculture, automotive services and printing. For more information call Lynn Vendinello at 202-564- 7066.
