PHOENIX, ARIZONA, ADOPTS REFORMULATED GASOLINE PROGRAM

On Feb. 7, EPA signed a final regulation that will add Phoenix, Ariz., to the list of areas operating a reformulated fuels (RFG) program. The Agency received a petition in January from the governor. RFG will be available at local retail stations at the beginning of the 1997 ozone season. RFG is a cost-effective control measure that will reduce ozone (smog) and toxic emissions providing significant public health benefits for the citizens of Phoenix. EPA analysis indicates the significant decline in toxic air pollutants between 1994 and 1995 may be attributed to the use of cleaner-burning reformulated gasoline. Areas in 17 states and the District of Columbia are participating in the program today.
