NEWS MEDIA ADVISORY

(Kansas City, Kan., Feb. 8, 2011) - EPA Region 7 will host two public meetings, Feb. 10 and 11, offering information about an administrative order on consent between EPA and the Omaha Tribal Utilities Program, focusing on solid waste, drinking water and wastewater issues with the Omaha Tribe in Macy, Neb.

In November 2010, the Omaha Tribal Utilities Program, Omaha Tribal Utilities Commission, and the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska, Macy, Neb., signed the order, which sets specific procedures for ceasing the open dumping and burning of municipal solid waste at the Mother Earth Recycling Facility, as well as removing and disposing of the residual wastes at the facility. The AOC also pertains to the tribe’s Macy, Neb., drinking water and wastewater system.

The order was issued under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, which states that EPA must provide an opportunity for public comment. The comment period opened on Dec. 8, 2010, and has been extended to Feb. 17, 2011. The order becomes final only after the public comment period ends and all comments are reviewed. EPA may modify the order based on new information and comments received from the public.

WHAT: Public meetings to discuss environmental compliance issues with the Omaha Tribe.

WHEN AND WHERE: 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, at Marina Inn, B Street and E. 4th Street, South Sioux City, Neb.; 8:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 11, at the Carl T. Curtis Health Center, 100 Indian Hills Drive, Macy, Neb.
