FOR RELEASE: THURSDAY, JULY 22, 1999
WEST VIRGINIA MAN SENTENCED FOR RCRA AND DRUG CHARGES

John Sams of Parkersburg, W.Va., was sentenced on July 15 in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia in Parkersburg to 12 years and 7 months in prison and 3 years of supervised release for the illegal storage of hazardous waste and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. Sams’ conviction arose out of his operation of an illegal methamphetamine drug lab and drug distribution ring in parts of West Virginia and Ohio from January 1997 to November 1998. This prosecution was the first in the Southern District of West Virginia to include an environmental charge that recognized the environmental hazards associated with the illegal production of methamphetamine. The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division, and was prosecuted by the U.S. Department of Justice.
