EPA Seeks Penalty for Hazardous Waste Storage Violations

ELKTON, Md. -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has cited Cordant Technologies Inc. for improper storage of hazardous wastes at its Morton Thiokol facility here. EPA’s complaint proposes a $17,598 penalty for alleged violations of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act that regulates storage of hazardous materials.

Cordant Technologies is a U.S. military contractor that uses the Morton Thiokol facility to assemble and disassemble military rockets. The process generates significant amounts of rocket fuels that are categorized as hazardous wastes.

The federal complaint alleges that a combined inspection by the EPA and the Maryland Department of Environment in September 1999 identified an open storage drum of hazardous waste, several improperly labeled containers of hazardous waste, and one drum with hazardous waste that did not have a required date.

The company may request a hearing to contest EPA’s allegations and proposed penalty.
