Release Date: 01/21/2011
Contact Information: Dawn Harris-Young, (404) 562-8421, harris-young.dawn@epa.gov

Representatives from EPA, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, the Alabama Department of Environmental Management, the Huntsville Housing Authority and Alagasco will be available to provide information and answer questions about upcoming site activities.

The Huntsville Gas Company site is comprised of approximately three acres and is located at 414-424 Dallas Avenue, Northwest in Huntsville. Historical information indicates that a corporation at the facility, originally known as Huntsville Gas Light Company, manufactured gas, primarily from coal, using a process known as coal gasification. In 1902, after an asset transfer to the Huntsville Gas Company (HGC), the facility continued to operate using the same process. After a series of mergers HGC became the Alabama Gas Corporation, commonly known as Alagasco. The Huntsville MGP was in operation from approximately 1872 to approximately 1946.

Community members interested in obtaining additional information are encouraged to contact Sherryl A. Carbonaro, EPA Community Involvement Coordinator, at (678) 575-7355.
