Today the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the signing of its 100th Partner in the SmartWaySM Transport Partnership at the National Industrial Transportation League (NITL) annual meeting. EPA also unveiled its new public service announcement (PSA) campaign, "Products on Wheels," for the Partnership. The PSA campaign is designed to encourage freight shippers and carriers to join the Partnership.

The SmartWay Transport Partnership has reached a significant milestone by signing J&R Schugel Trucking, Inc., of New Ulm, Minnesota, as the 100th Partner. With the 100th Partner, the SmartWay Transport Partnership has now nearly doubled in the nine months since its launch in February 2004. This achievement signifies a movement within the freight industry toward cleaner, more efficient operations.

The SmartWay Transport Partnership is a national voluntary program developed by EPA and freight industry representatives to reduce greenhouse gases and air pollution and promotes cleaner, more efficient ground freight transportation. By 2012, the Partnership aims to reduce as much as 33 to 66 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and up to 200,000 tons of nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions annually.

Companies can become SmartWay Transport Partners by committing to an environmental improvement goal over a three-year period and annually sharing their progress with EPA. Partners achieve goals by adopting improved practices, processes and energy saving technologies that are cost effective, cleaner, more efficient, and capable of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
