U.S. AND MEXICO TO HOLD MEETINGS ON ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

     (San Francisco)--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) and the Mexican Secretariat for Environment, Natural Resources and Fisheries (SEMARNAP) will hold a binational symposium to obtain public input for developing "Border XXI", a joint U.S.-Mexico program that will address environmental problems in the border area.  The meeting will take place on
October 30, 1995, from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., at the Hotel Lucerna, Paseo de Los Heroes 10902, Tijuana, Baja Calif.

     This meeting, and a similar meeting being held in El Paso, Texas on November 1, 1995, are the culmination of 18 public outreach meetings that the Mexican and U.S. governments held along the border.  The results of the issues raised at those meetings will be presented in Tijuana and El Paso for consideration in establishing priorities for allocating resources under the Border XXI program.

     U.S. EPA and SEMARNAP strongly encourage community participation at these meetings.  Community participation is essential to the development of the Border XXI environmental program.  During these meetings, U.S. EPA and SEMARNAP representatives will be available to answer questions and respond to comments.
