PHILADELPHIA (September 25, 2008) -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s mid-Atlantic region today announced winners of its first environmental achievement awards, including two in Maryland – a Baltimore County woman leading environmental efforts at work and in the community, and a “green team” at the Frito-Lay plant in Aberdeen.

“Environmental protection is a team effort and these awards highlight some of the remarkable work being done by our partners throughout the region,” said EPA Regional Administrator Donald S. Welsh during a ceremony at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

The Mid-Atlantic Environmental Achievement Awards recognize groups, agencies, individuals and businesses making extraordinary contributions to improving the environment in the mid-Atlantic region, which includes Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. The winning entries were selected from among more than 100 nominations.

The Maryland award winners include:

· Joan D. Plisko, PhD, technical director of the successful Maryland Hospitals for a Healthy Environment program and a community environmental leader in her Catonsville neighborhood and Baltimore County.

    · The Frito-Lay Aberdeen Green Team for its proactive approach to lowering the plant’s environmental footprint through actions to significantly reduce electricity, natural gas and water usage.

The awards were presented in three categories: non-profit or volunteer organization; business and industry; and state, local or other federal government agency. For a full list of winners and more information on the awards, visit: https://www.epa.gov/region03/2008EnvironmentalAwards/ .
