(Boston, Mass. – March 5, 2008) The Town of Warren, Rhode Island Wastewater Treatment Plant was recently selected by EPA for a Regional "Operations and Maintenance Wastewater Excellence Award".

The staff of the Warren Wastewater Treatment Plant, led by David Komiega, Plant Manager, was recognized by EPA's New England Office for exceptional work in the operations and maintenance of the facility to improve water quality. The plant was among seven facilities in New England acknowledged for exemplary performance during 2007. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management was instrumental in nominating this facility.

“The professionals operating these wastewater treatment plants, as well as the municipalities and the state environmental agencies that support them, are key to keeping our environment healthy. I am proud to give them the credit they deserve,” said Robert W. Varney, regional administrator of EPA's New England Office.

The EPA Regional Operations & Maintenance Excellence Award was established to recognize and honor the employees of publicly owned wastewater treatment plants for their commitment to improving water quality with outstanding plant operations and maintenance and on-going operator training. More often than not and particularly with the smaller facilities, conscientious operators and staff continue to perform exceptionally with limited resources.

“What is critical to the success we've experienced here at the Warren Facility, is a community that is willing to invest each year, providing the operator the resources' necessary in protecting the receiving streams, which are vulnerable to poor plant performance,” says Komiega.

The staff and facility were recognized on January 30th at the annual New England Water Environment Association Conference in Boston. The Warren facility will have the opportunity to be nominated for a National EPA 2008 Operations and Maintenance Excellence Award this coming spring.
