PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced 20 environmental education grants awarded throughout the mid-Atlantic region. EPA awarded a $4,550 grant to Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania which is based in Pittsburgh.

The program funded is Pittsburgh’s Outdoor Classroom: Education of Secondary School Students on Real-Life Environmental Issues. This program serves seven western Pennsylvania counties. EPA’s funding will support teaching secondary school students from Fayette County about two of the region’s most visible and pervasive community environmental issues: the effects of habitat degradation on wildlife resources and the tension between current land development practices and the preservation of natural resources. Students will be involved in researching the topic through a series of informative classroom programs and hands-on outdoor discovery programs.

“We are proud to support this program, which will help students understand important local environmental challenges,” said mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator Donald S. Welsh.

Since 1992, EPA has provided more than $2 million annually in funding to local organizations and schools and has awarded a total of 1,700 grants. These grass-roots grants fund educational programs in nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and governmental agencies supporting a wide range of environmental issues for citizens of all ages.
