Louisiana Receives Over $2 Million to Address Non-Point Source Pollution

(DALLAS – April 8, 2011) Louisiana is receiving a grant for $2,262,000 to address non-point source pollution, the most prevalent type of water pollution in the state and across the nation. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded the grant to the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) to address the goals of Louisiana's Source Water Protection and Non-point Source programs.

Runoff or non-point source water pollution happens when contaminants are carried into rivers, lakes, wetlands, coastal waters and ground waters. The source of the pollution may come from lawn fertilizers, improperly managed construction sites, or oil and grease from highways. EPA encourages households to purchase detergents and cleaners that are low in phosphorous to reduce the amount of nutrients discharged into our lakes, streams and coastal waters.
