EPA to Participate at TechBirmingham Ecycling Day event in Birmingham, Alabama for Earth Day 2005

(Atlanta, GA April 20, 2005)  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will participate with TechBirmingham at the metro-wide "Ecycling Day event" on Earth Day, Friday, April 22, 2005 in Birmingham, Alabama.  Residents from across the Birmingham area and beyond will be asked to deliver accepted items to fifteen designated, convenient collection locations.  EPA will provide technical assistance, education and outreach materials, and volunteer to work at the collection sites.  This event is believed to be one of the largest Ecycling events in the Southeast. 

Other partners involved in this effort include: Computer Help For Kids; Microsoft; McWane Center; Catalyst for Birmingham; SunGard Workflow Solutions' Octane8; Virginia College; Birmingham EarthFest; Specialty Services, Inc.; Handoff Wireless, Inc.; The Printer Connection; and the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham.  The ecycling event was established to encourage the citizens of the Birmingham region to recycle their used electronic equipment.

Fifteen locations will accept items on Friday, April 22, 2005. Items accepted include: Desktop computers, Laptop computers, Computer monitors, Keyboards and input devices, Printers, Scanners, Digital cameras, PDAs and handheld devices, Game systems, Printer cartridges (laser and inkjet), and Cell phones.  Volunteers at most locations will assist in the unloading of donated equipment and provide each consumer with a tax receipt.  Many of the computers collected will be refurbished and redistributed into the community for reuse.
