CHICAGO (Oct. 25, 2005) — U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has filed an administrative complaint against B & B Metals Processing Co. Inc. for alleged clean-air violations at the company's aluminum recovery plant at 14520 Pioneer Road, Newton, Wis. EPA proposed a $96,572 penalty.

EPA alleges that B & B Metals failed to comply with federal testing, notification, monitoring, reporting and recordkeeping requirements for its furnace. EPA said the company did not timely test the furnace for dioxin and furan emissions.

B & B Metals has 30 days from receipt of the complaint to file an answer and request a hearing. The company may request an informal conference with EPA at any time to discuss resolving the allegations.

There is evidence that dioxins may cause liver damage and probably cause cancer in humans, while furans may also cause cancer.
