Northwest Colleges and Universities have a bright idea: Green Power

Northwest Schools Recognized as Top Green Power Purchasers

(Seattle, Wash. April 28, 2008) During the 2007-2008 academic year, EPA has tracked the green power purchasing of colleges and universities across collegiate athletic conferences. These conferences and their representative schools are displaying environmental leadership by buying green power to reduce the environmental impacts associated with their conventional electricity use. To take part in the Green Power Challenge, a conference’s member schools must be purchasing a combined total of at least 10 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power.

The Pacific Northwest leaders listed below have been recognized by EPA as award winners of EPA’s 2007-2008 College & University Green Power Challenge. Individual Conference Champions for the Pacific Northwest are:

• Oregon State University – 66,680,400 Green Power (KWh) – Pacific-10 Conference
• Western Washington University – 40,000,000 Green Power (kWh) – Great Northwest Athletic Conference
• Southern Oregon University – 17,622,000 Green Power (kWh) – Cascade Collegiate Conference
