PHOENIX PREPARES FOR CLEANER REFORMULATED FUEL

Petroleum refiners and gasoline retailers are getting ready for the introduction of a cleaner, less toxic gasoline in the city of Phoenix. By Aug. 1, motorists will fill their gas tanks with reformulated fuel (RFG), a specially blended fuel that increases fuel combustion efficiency which, in turn, will reduce vehicle emissions providing significant health benefits. The phase I RFG program will yield a 15 to 17 percent reduction in ozone-forming and air toxics emissions from vehicles. The Clean Air Act allows areas that exceed the national health standard for ground-level ozone to adopt the RFG program upon request from the governor. Ozone damages sensitive lung tissue, increasing susceptibility to respiratory infection, especially in young children whose lungs are not fully developed.
