Bountiful and Woods Cross groundwater set for Superfund cleanup

Denver --A plume of contaminated groundwater moving under parts of Bountiful and Woods Cross has made its way onto the National Priorities List (NPL) of Superfund sites, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today in Denver.

The Plume underlies parts of Bountiful, West Bountiful and Woods Cross in Davis County, from 750 South to 400 North and from 500 West to 1100 West. The site is bounded by private homes and agricultural land on the west; businesses and homes to the south. Industries and homes lie to the north with an Interstate highway, railroad tracks, and businesses farther east.

Samples taken by EPA and the Utah Department of Environmental Quality found solvents including tetrachloroethylene (a commonly used degreaser and dry-cleaning compound also know as PCE) in groundwater beneath the site. Municipal drinking water wells are within a four- mile radius of the site and could become contaminated. PCE is a possible carcinogen.

Listing of the site provides funding for cleanup work and guarantees the public an opportunity to participate in cleanup decisions.

Today=s announcement follows a 60-day Public Comment Period during which citizens were able to comment on the listing. Information EPA used to propose the listing last December and the Agency=s response to public comments will be available for review at:
