(Seattle – December 3, 2012) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Region 10 completed over 50 environmental compliance and enforcement actions during July through September in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. EPA enforces the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, and other environmental laws designed to protect people’s health and the environment.

EPA offers compliance assistance to help people understand and follow federal environmental laws. Enforcement penalties deter violators who might gain an unfair business advantage over those who are environmentally compliant. Penalties vary depending on the severity of violations, how quickly they are corrected, and past violations. Compliance Orders direct violators to bring their activities into compliance with the law, but do not include penalties.

The table below summarizes EPA’s compliance and enforcement actions for July through September 2012.
