EPA SEEKS NOMINATIONS FOR TOP ENVIRONMENTAL CITIZENS, GROUPS AND BUSINESSES

BOSTON - The New England regional office of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is seeking nominations for its annual Merit Awards program, which recognizes environmental achievement by individuals, businesses, organizations, and state and local governments in the region.

The awards have been given annually since the agency was created in 1970. Past recipients have included scientists, business representatives, public officials, and other individuals committed to preserving the environment. The deadlines for nominations this year is March 8.

"Each year the Environmental Merit Awards give us a change to applaud the people and organizations who have shown a special commitment to the goal of protecting the public health and environment of New England," said Mindy S. Lubber, acting regional administrator for EPA New England. "We welcome nominations of individuals, businesses and non-profit groups whose accomplishments can serve as an example to us all."

An independent EPA panel will select the winners from among those nominated based on the following criteria: promotion of innovative ideas, techniques and/or technologies; ability to address an environmental problem or need; accomplishment of stated goals; ability of the program to be replicated or widely shared; collaboration with others; clarity and effectiveness of the presentation; and long term effects on the environment.

The awards are given in four categories: individual; business, industry, trade or professional organization; local, state or federal government; and environmental, community or non-profit organization.
