EPA CELEBRATES EARTH DAY AT UNDERGROUND ATLANTA

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold an Earth Day event on Thursday, April 22, 1999 at Underground Atlanta from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. EPA will be joined by several other environmental organizations including Campaign for a Prosperous Georgia, Georgia Conservancy, Upper Chattahoochee River Keeper, and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Pollution Prevention Assistance Division.

The first Earth Day is credited to former Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin who, in 1970, organized a series of “teach-ins” around the country which culminated in the U.S. Congress declaring April 22, 1970 as “Earth Day.” That year was also the year that EPA was established in response to growing concerns about unhealthy air, polluted rivers, unsafe drinking water, endangered species, and waste disposal. Since the first celebration, Earth Day has become a catalyst for environmental groups to promote their agendas and for others to contemplate responsible actions to preserve and protect the environment.

EPA invites all concerned citizens of Atlanta and surrounding areas to join us in this Earth Day celebration. EPA and the other exhibitors will distribute environmental literature, as well as flower and vegetable seeds free of charge to the public.
