YORK, Pa. – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded a $950,200 grant increase to build a pump station and collection system in Springettsbury Township, York County, Pennsylvania.

The funding will be used to divert about one-third the township’s wastewater so it flows to the city of York’s wastewater treatment plant rather than the township’s treatment plant. Population growth and rainwater infiltration to the sanitary sewers system have increased flows to the township’s wastewater treatment plant. During wet weather, peak flows have resulted in violations of the township’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit. The diversion of wastewater to York’s treatment plant will eliminate these permit violations, and allow new hookups to the system.

“We are pleased to help communities eliminate potential water pollution and maintain clean waterways that residents can use for recreation,” said Bradley Campbell, EPA mid-Atlantic regional administrator.

The project will serve a population of approximately 81,400. Construction is scheduled to be complete in July 2000.

This grant supplements a $1 million EPA grant awarded to Springettsbury Township that was used to begin construction last November.
