(#98071) Buffalo, N.Y. -- National and regional specialists on global warming, whose expertise ranges from energy production to the Native American tribal response to climate change, will convene today for a one-day conference, hosted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in Buffalo, New York. The experts will explore the environmental and economic impact of global warming on western upstate New York and the Great Lakes region. The latest scientific information on climate change will be presented along with an update on the next round of international negotiations set for November in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

"This meeting will be productive because it will bring together experts from different sectors that may sometimes be adversaries to discuss how the area can tackle one of the greatest environmental challenges we face -- global warming," said Jeanne M. Fox, EPA Region 2 Administrator. "If we all work together, we can prove that, in the long run, we can protect our planet without destroying global and local economies."

Meeting sessions will focus on local opportunities to benefit both economically and environmentally from new clean energy technologies. Conference participants will also discuss the potential effects of climate change on local forests and water resources, as well as human health issues related to heat waves and poor air quality.

The all-day conference will be held at Buffalo's Hyatt Regency Hotel. It is being co-sponsored by the United States Environmental Protection Agency; the U.S. Department of Energy; the City of Buffalo; Erie County; the Haudenosaunee Environmental Task Force; the Institute for Business and Home Safety; the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority; Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation; the State University of New York, Buffalo; and the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives.
