EPA Region 2 Releases First Comprehensive "State Of The Environment" Report; Tracks Environmental Trends in New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands

(#98163b) New York, N.Y. -- Region 2 of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today issued its first comprehensive environmental report, the State of the Environment 1998.

The report, which is available to the public, details trends and data about the health of the environment in the region. The region comprises New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and seven federally-recognized Indian nations located within New York State. Residents of these areas may look to the report for information on air and water quality; the manufacturing and disposal of waste; petroleum and toxic substances; Superfund sites; ecosystem health; wildlife preservation; the urban environment; and issues of environmental justice.

"The State of the Environment report encapsulates the remarkable achievements made in Region 2 over the past several years," said Jeanne M. Fox, EPA Region 2 Administrator. "For the first time, concerned citizens living in the region have one-stop access to an honest and comprehensive overview of their natural environment. We hope the public will be as pleased as we are with the trends noted in the report, which suggest a cleaner environment for the region's diverse populations and ecosystems."
