Contact Information: Peyton Fleming, EPA Press Office (617-918-1008)

BOSTON - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will host a commercial lending forum for business owners affected by the proposed GE-Pittsfield/Housatonic River Consent Decree on January 18, 2000 at the Crowne Plaza in Pittsfield.

EPA is organizing the forum in response to questions from the public regarding commercial lending issues related to site cleanups and the proposed Consent Decree.

"This is a good opportunity for local business owners to pose questions to EPA and the banking community about how the proposed Consent Decree affects them and their commercial properties," said Mindy S. Lubber, acting regional administrator at EPA's New England Office.

Commercial property owners and any other concerned citizen will have an opportunity to ask questions of representatives from EPA, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), and three regional banks that have agreed to participate in the forum: Berkshire Bank, the First Massachusetts Bank, and Legacy Bank, City and Lenox.

EPA and DEP representatives will also briefly discuss their policies that may affect lending on commercial properties.
