EPA Awards over $100,000 to Pueblo of Taos

(DALLAS – May 20, 2011) The Taos Pueblo of New Mexico is implementing a non-point source pollution program to restore the Rio Pueblo de Taos watershed. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded $106,807 to the Pueblo for restoration efforts, outreach and environmental education. The Pueblo will enhance riparian zones and vegetated areas adjacent to streams and wetlands, to help intercept and control pollution entering the water body.

The Clean Water Act authorizes EPA to provide administration and oversight of its programs and it also empowers states and local jurisdictions the ability to mitigate the effects of non-point source pollution. Non-point source pollution comes from scattered sources and can reach rivers through polluted runoff from rain and snow.
