CALIFORNIA MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO ILLEGAL DISPOSAL OF HAZARDOUS WASTE

Luke C. Hester 202-464-7818 / hester.luke@epa.gov

Mark Bachman of El Cajon, Calif., CEO of Bigger Than Life, Inc., pleaded guilty on Sept. 4 to violating the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act by illegally disposing of hazardous waste. The company, which manufactures inflatable advertising items, was in the process of vacating rented space when the defendant directed employees to improperly dispose of waste materials, including waste paint, paint thinners and other solvents. This can create both fire and human exposure hazards and possibly cause serious injury or death. When sentenced, the defendant faces a maximum sentence of up to five years in prison and/or a fine of up to $250,000. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division in Washington, D.C., the FBI and the San Diego Department of Environmental Health Services. It was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s office in San Diego.
