Virginia Awarded $15.1 Million More For Communities to Provide Safe Drinking Water

RICHMOND, Va. - The United States Environmental Protection Agency awarded $15.1 million to the Commonwealth of Virginia to improve and protect drinking water supplies.

Bradley Campbell, EPA’s mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator, said, “Safe drinking water is the first line of defense in protecting public health. These funds help communities provide safe drinking water and are an important part of overall watershed protection.”

The federal money is used in three ways:

• The Virginia Department of Health receives $13.8 million of federal funds

• From the $13.8 million grant, the Department of Health loans $2 million to the Coalfield Water Development Fund to invest. The investment earnings finance drinking water facilities in southwestern Virginia.

• The remaining $1.3 million is used to provide technical assistance to small water systems, assistance in developing local source water protection programs, training for plant operators, and development of water system business plans.
