MINNESOTA RENDERING PLANT MANAGER CONVICTED OF CLEAN WATER ACT VIOLATIONS
On Oct. 3, Timothy Guzek, former general manager at Darling International’s Blue Earth Rendering Plant located in Blue Earth, Minn., was convicted of one count of conspiracy, two counts of illegal discharge of pollutants into waters of the U.S., three counts of tampering with waste water samples, two counts of falsification of discharge monitoring reports and one count of making a false statement in U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota in Minneapolis. The rendering plant turns animal wastes such as fat, blood, feathers, meat and bone into useful products. When sentenced, Guzek faces a maximum of up to 23 years imprisonment and/or up to $2.25 million in fines. Guzek is the third employee of the company to have been convicted of conspiring to violate the Clean Water Act by discharging unpermitted levels of ammonia and other pollutants into the Blue Earth River. The company has also pleaded guilty and has paid a $4 million fine. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
