Newburg Gets $1.8 Million EPA Grant for New Sewer System

NEWBURG, W. Va. – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded a $1.8 million grant to Newburg to construct a new sewer collection and treatment facility.

The new collection system will eliminate failing on-lot septic systems and the direct discharge into Raccoon Creek. Funds will be used to design and construct a 25,000-gallon per day sewage treatment plant and a wastewater collection system to serve approximately 330 residents.

The funds will also help Newburg achieve compliance with a pending administrative order from West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection to eliminate the raw sewage discharges to Raccoon Creek.

“All of us recognize that safe, clean water is the first line of defense for public health. This grant is an important step in improving and maintaining public health and water quality to the Town of Newburg,” said Bradley Campbell, administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

The grant will pay for 94 percent of the $1.9 million project, and the Rural Utility Service will fund the remaining 6 percent.
