ILLEGAL INJECTION OF HAZARDOUS WASTE NETS THREE YEARS WITHOUT PAROLE FOR TULSA, MAN

On July 3, Richard Hub of Tulsa, Okla., was sentenced to three years in federal prison and ordered to pay $50,000 in restitution for illegally injecting hazardous liquid waste into a disposal well in Coffeyville, Kan. Hub's company, Bio-Clean (also known as Genesis Industries and Oil Recovery Technology) operated a waste storage and disposal facility at the OK Oil site in Coffeyville between September 1991 and January 1992. Hub injected the waste into a disposal well that was not classified to accept hazardous waste. Such disposal is illegal under the Safe Drinking Water Act, which prohibits the unauthorized use of injection wells in order to prevent endangerment of underground drinking water supplies. The case was investigated by EPA's Criminal Investigation Division with the assistance of the Kansas Corporation Commission.
