EPA Recognizes Best Workplaces for CommutersSM from the FORTUNE 500 Companies

     Nine Texas companies are among the top 20 "Best Workplaces for Commuters from the FORTUNE 500 Companies" in the nation recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).  The companies are recognized for their environmental commitment to reducing air pollution and easing traffic congestion caused by so many vehicles on our nation's roads.

     "These companies are showing their commitment to improving the quality of life in their communities.  I salute their leadership, dedication and far-sightedness in emphasizing environmentally friendly business practices," EPA Regional Administrator Richard E. Greene said.

     Companies on the "Top 20 List" have the highest percentages of employees eligible for these commuter benefits in their U.S. worksites. Companies recognized today have met the National Standard of Excellence, extending outstanding commuter benefits to over 400,000 employees across the country.  
     The top 20 best workplaces for commuters from the FORTUNE 500 companies include the following Texas companies (with their national rankings): USAA, Houston (4); Oracle, Houston (5); Advanced Micro Devices, Austin (7); Texas Instruments, Dallas and Plano sites (8); Devon Energy, Houston (13); Reliant Energy, Houston (three sites, combined ranking of 15); International Business Machines, Fort Worth (16); Dynegy, Houston (19) and; El Paso, Houston (20).

     To qualify as one of the Best Workplaces for Commuters, employers must provide:
- at least one primary commuter benefit, such as a monthly transit/vanpool pass subsidy or a significant telecommuting program;
- at least three supporting commuter benefits, such as carpool/vanpool incentives, lockers/showers for bikers or walkers, compressed/flexible work schedules, or onsite daycare;
- a central point of contact, who actively informs employees of available commuter benefits; and
- access to a regional or employer-provided Emergency/Guaranteed Ride Home Program.
