EPA Grants Help Pennsylvania Communities Improve Water Quality

PHILADELPHIA - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded six grants totaling $57.6 million for water quality construction work projects in Pennsylvania communities.

“These grants are important in maintaining public health. EPA is committed to helping communities improve water quality,” said W. Michael McCabe, EPA’s mid-Atlantic regional administrator.

Specifically, grants were awarded for the following projects:

• Allegheny County will receive $2.5 million to resolve sanitary sewer problems associated with the aging sewage infrastructures in the county.

• Delta Borough, York County will receive $435,000 to finance a wastewater collection system in Peach Bottom Township, Pa. and Hartford County, Md. Malfunctioning on-lot septic systems were causing discharges into ditches and drainage channels in the area.

• Johnstown-Cambria County Airport Authority will receive $957,000 to construct a new water line and improve its wastewater treatment system.

• Blair County Convention Center and Sports Facility Authority will get $481,250 to extend the existing sewer and water line systems to the site of the new convention center.

• Municipal Authority of the Borough of Lewistown will receive $696,000 to extend the water line to residences in the High Bridge and Maitland Village in Derry Township.

• Northern Blair County Regional Sewer Authority will receive $696,000 to construct a wastewater treatment system to 245 residences in the Vale and Bald Eagle areas of Synder Township that have failing on-lot septic systems.

The grants will cover 55 percent of the costs of construction projects that will begin sometime in 2000.
