EPA TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS GROUNDWATER STRATEGY FOR CENTRAL LANDFILL SUPERFUND SITE

Boston - The U.S. EPA is holding a public meeting on August 14 at 7:00 pm at the Johnston High School auditorium in Johnston, RI to discuss the agency's future groundwater plans at the Central Landfill Superfund Site.

EPA will present its Proposed Plan, a document detailing the agency's work to date and its preferred cleanup strategy. That document is being mailed to residents in advance of the meeting. The agency will hold a formal public hearing on August 30, 2001 at the Johnston High School at 7:00 pm to receive citizen comments. Written comments should be sent to Byron Mah, Remedial Project Manager, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency New England, HBT, 1 Congress Street, Boston, MA 02114-2023. Submissions must be postmarked by September 14, 2001.

Central Landfill Superfund Site, a 121-acre section of the landfill, was placed on the National Priorities List in 1986. EPA identified a one half acre area where at least 1.5 million gallons of hazardous wastes had been dumped contaminating groundwater. EPA has been working to clean up the site since 1994.
