EPA Superfund Removal Action to Begin at the PandW Waste Oil Site in Brunswick County, North Carolina

ATLANTA – Today, U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officials announced plans to begin a Superfund hazardous substance removal at the P&W Waste Oil Superfund Site. The Site is located at 10518 Royster Road, Leland, Brunswick County, NC which is in Navassa city limits.

The removal action is a short-term cleanup intended to stabilize and clean up a site that poses a threat to human health and the environment. Presently, the facility is not operational and waste oil at the facility contains high concentrations of PCBs and heavy metals and is being stored in deteriorating above-ground storage tanks.

The removal action is taking place under the authority and direction of the EPA Region 4 Emergency Response and Removal Branch (ERRB). The EPA will remove contaminated waste oil, sludge and oily water stored in above ground storage tanks from the Site. EPA anticipates that removal activities will begin in October 2013.

P&W Waste Oil Superfund Site is a former waste oil recycling facility that began operation in 1993 and continued operation until the facility closed in March 2013. The site is bordered by several industrial facilities, a federally recognized wetland and the Cape Fear River. While the facility was in operation, waste oil was transported to the facility and treated to later be sold for the purposes of energy production.
