As part of the ongoing effort to support the President’s energy plan, EPA has awarded $25,000 to Citizens for Pennsylvania’s Future (PennFuture) to increase that state’s share of electricity generated from renewable sources, such as solar, wind, water or biomass power, to 10 percent by 2010.
Through this grant, PennFuture will expand its “Green Power: Turn It On!” program to encourage large electricity users to purchase electricity from renewable sources. Large electricity users include commercial and industrial institutions as well as local and state governments.
Electricity generated from renewable sources can have significant environmental benefits over traditional sources of electricity such as fossil fuels. Increasing use of renewable sources of electricity will reduce air emissions of nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, carbon dioxide and mercury, reducing the effects of acid rain, smog, global warming and other negative environmental impacts associated with conventional electricity generation. Using electricity generated from renewable sources can improve public health by reducing the amount of pollutants released into the air that can cause asthma and other pulmonary disease.
PennFuture is a nonprofit organization located in Harrisburg, Pa., that works to accelerate the transition from traditional sources of energy to cleaner, renewable sources. PennFuture is also expanding its green power program to encourage citizens in other cities across the nation to buy electricity from renewable sources.
