(DALLAS – March 14, 2012) American households waste more than one trillion gallons of water each year due to leaky pipes, toilets, showerheads and other fixtures, but fixing leaks can be easy and inexpensive. During the 4th annual Fix a Leak Week, March 12-16, 2012, the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) WaterSense program is educating Americans about the importance of fixing leaks around the home, which will save water and nearly 10 percent on utility bills.

The EPA and WaterSense’s 2011 Manufacturer Partner of the Year Delta Faucet Company, along with GreenPlumbers, Innerline Plumbing and Andress Plumbing, will be in Dallas March 12-16 retrofitting 12 facilities for non-profit organizations that assist the homeless in finding shelter and temporary housing with WaterSense-labeled showerheads, faucet aerators and toilet flappers.

“EPA’s WaterSense program provides solutions that are a win-win for our wallets and our environment,” said EPA Regional Administrator Al Armendariz. “Efficient products and informed citizens lead to smart water use.”

The anticipated water savings for these retrofits will amount to more than two million gallons of water per year, saving $9,700 in water utility bills for these organizations.

The average household can waste more than 10,000 gallons of water each year from easy-to-fix water leaks. That equates to more than one trillion gallons of water loss across America each year. The Fix a Leak Week campaign reminds homeowners of the easy steps they can take to help save water in their community now and for future generations.

WaterSense, a partnership program sponsored by EPA, seeks to protect the future of our nation's water supply by offering people a simple way to use less water with water-efficient products. Since the program's inception in 2006, WaterSense has helped consumers save 125 billion gallons of water and more than $2 billion in water and energy bills. Consumers can find WaterSense-labeled products at thousands of retail locations across the country.
