FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 1996

EPA TO HOLD FIRST MEETING
WITH ENDOCRINE DISRUPTOR ADVISORY COMMITTEE

EPA's Office of Prevention, Pesticide and Toxic Substances will hold a meeting on Dec. 12-13, with the Endocrine Disruptor Screening and Testing Advisory Committee (EDSTAC) in the Embassy Suites Hotel, 250 Gateway Blvd., South San Francisco, Calif. The meeting is open to the public and will be held from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Dec. 12. There will be an opportunity for public comment from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., also on Dec. 12. The committee will reconvene from 8 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 13. The EDSTAC was established in November under the Federal Advisory Committee Act and was formed to advise the Agency on a strategy to screen and test chemicals, including pesticides, for their potential to disrupt endocrine functions in humans and wildlife. Mandates requiring that EPA establish a screening and testing program for endocrine disrupting chemicals are contained in the recently enacted Food Quality Protection Act as well as new amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act. Topics on the agenda for the two-day meeting include: a review of the scope of activities to be addressed by the committee; and a preliminary discussion of the principles to be used by the Agency for establishing an endocrine disruptor screening and testing programs. Representation on the committee includes government, industry, academia and public interest groups. An agenda for the meeting will be available in the Federal Register the week of Dec. 2. Background materials and an agenda for the meeting can be obtained by calling the Office of Pesticide Programs at 703-305-5017.
