PHILADELPHIA (October 1, 2008) – EPA and Sartomer Company, Inc. have settled hazardous waste violations at the company’s facility at 610 South Bolmar St., West Chester, Pa.

EPA cited Sartomer for violating the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), the federal law governing the treatment, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste. RCRA is designed to protect public health and the environment, and avoid costly cleanups, by requiring the safe, environmentally sound storage and disposal of hazardous waste.

Following a May 2007 inspection by EPA, the following violations were identified.

* operating a hazardous waste storage facility without a permit
* failing to comply with hazardous waste container storage requirements, new tank system design/installation and inspection requirements
* failing to comply with air emission standards equipment marking and monitoring requirements
* failing to comply with universal waste lamp storage requirements and universal waste accumulation time limit requirements

The company will pay a $108,000 civil penalty. As part of the settlement, Sartomer has neither admitted nor denied liability for the alleged violations, but has certified its compliance with applicable RCRA requirements.
