(Boston, Mass. – March 5, 2008) The Town of Windsor Locks, CT Water Pollution Control Facility was recently selected by EPA for a Regional "Operations and Maintenance Wastewater Excellence Award".

The staff of the Windsor Locks facility, led by Gary Kuczarski, Superintendent, Rich Persson, Chief Operator, John Kana, Operator, and Mark Bukowski, Operator, was recognized by EPA's New England Office for exceptional work in operating and maintaining the plant. In addition, Scott Lappen, Director of Public Works, and the Town’s Select Board were acknowledged for their outstanding support. The plant was among seven facilities in New England acknowledged for exemplary performance during 2007. The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection was instrumental in nominating this facility.

“The professionals operating these wastewater treatment plants, as well as the municipalities and the state environmental agencies that support them, are key to keeping our environment healthy. I am proud to give them the credit they deserve,” said Robert W. Varney, regional administrator of EPA's New England Office.

The EPA Regional Operations & Maintenance Excellence Award was established to recognize and honor the employees of publicly owned wastewater treatment plants for their commitment to improving water quality with outstanding plant operations and maintenance and on-going operator training. More often than not and particularly with the smaller facilities, conscientious operators and staff continue to perform exceptionally with limited resources.

"The Windsor Locks Water Pollution Control Authority was very excited to hear that the Treatment Plant was receiving the award. I think this was a tremendous honor that highlights the dedication and professionalism of our staff at the facility. It is well deserved recognition, for a job well done,” said Mr. Lappen.

The staff and facility were recognized on January 30th at the annual New England Water Environment Association Conference in Boston. The Windsor Locks facility will have the opportunity to be nominated for a National EPA 2008 Operations and Maintenance Excellence Award this coming spring.
