BOSTON-- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recognized 35 New England environmental champions, including 10 from New Hampshire, with Environmental Merit Awards during an Earth Day celebration today at Faneuil Hall in Boston.

"New Englanders have a long tradition of being acutely aware of their environment and taking action to protect it. We are pleased to honor just a few of those that truly deserve recognition for their actions." said EPA Regional Administrator John DeVillars. " The winners, in fact all of the nominees, set an example for all of us to follow."

The Merit Awards, presented annually since 1970, recognize demonstrated commitment and significant contributions to the environment. The winners were selected from nearly 100 nominations received this year from businesses, media, local and state government officials, environmental organizations, and citizen activists.

The New Hampshire winners and basis for recognition are:

JACK HEAD, Laconia, NH: Recognizing that no one was working to remove submerged trash in the Winnipesaukee River and Lakes Opechee and Winnisquam, Jack organized annual cleanups of those water bodies, removing tons of trash ranging from shopping carts and bicycles to two ton boilers.

TOM KIERNAN, Bow, NH: As New Hampshire Audubon Society's able leader, Tom has skillfully channeled his organization's scant resources in highly effective directions on behalf of the environment. Nowhere was this more true than in his and NH Audubon's courageous and effective involvement in the environmental reviews of the Nashua Circumferential and Conway Bypass highway projects. New Hampshire is much better as a consequence of Tom and Audubon.

DALE LEWIS, Haverhill, NH: Dale's concern for the environment has placed him as a leader and innovator working to identify, understand and correct non-point source problems effecting water quality around his dairy farm.
