FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Kansas City, Kan., June 19, 2009) - EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson will host a United We Serve kickoff event at the Lewis and Clark Historic Park at Kaw Point in Kansas City, Kan., on Monday, June 22. The Administrator will assist with a water monitoring and cleanup project at the historic confluence of Missouri and Kansas rivers.

Local school students, including those from St. Regis Catholic School in Kansas City, Mo., will conduct water monitoring and assist with cleanup efforts at the site. This United We Serve event will also involve volunteers and personnel from the Blue River Watershed Association, Friends of the Kaw, Missouri River Relief, Missouri Department of Conservation, Missouri Stream Team, and other organizations.

This summer, through the United We Serve initiative, President Obama is calling on all Americans to participate in our nation’s recovery and renewal by performing volunteer service initiatives. From June 22 to September 11, United We Serve will engage Americans from coast to coast in addressing community needs in education, health, energy and the environment, and community renewal.

Space will be available on river-going boats for media representatives to join the Missouri Stream Team.
