EPA to Collect Hazardous Containers from Missouri Floods

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Kansas City, Kan., March 24, 2008) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has been tasked by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to coordinate collection of orphaned hazardous containers from flooded areas in southern Missouri. Record-breaking rainfall early last week caused flooding in 70 counties and the City of St. Louis.

Under the FEMA mission assignment, EPA on-scene coordinators and contractors will collect and dispose of hazardous containers such as fuel and propane tanks. EPA is working closely with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) on orphaned hazardous container collection.

Citizens who need to report an orphaned hazardous container, such as a propane or fuel tank, should call MDNR's 24-hour spill line at 573-634-2436.

An EPA on-scene coordinator is also serving as the Agency liaison at the Emergency Operations Center in Jefferson City, Mo.
