U.S.-Mexico Border Environmental Plan to be Signed in Tijuana -- 10 states, U.S. tribes involved in plan

(04/02/03) On Friday, April 4, the environmental agencies of the United States and Mexico, joined by representatives of U.S. and Mexico border states and U.S. tribal nations, will finalize a new 10-year binational border plan designed to protect public health and the environment along the 2,000-mile border. The ten border region states are Baja California Norte, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas in Mexico and California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas in the United States. Building on the success of previous efforts over 30 years, including a five-year border plan which was successfully completed in 2002, the new program, Border 2012, will focus on decreasing air, water, waste and soil pollution in the border region and on lowering the risks of exposure to pesticides and other chemicals.
