EPA to Hold Public Meeting Regarding the Red Panther Chemical Company Superfund Site, Clarksdale, Mississippi

(Atlanta, GA – May 9, 2011) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold a public meeting on Monday, May 16, 2011 regarding the Red Panther Chemical Company Superfund Site in Clarksdale, MS.

The public meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Booker T. Washington Elementary School, 1800 Sunflower Ave., Clarksdale, MS 38614. Representatives from the EPA and the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality will discuss upcoming plans for the site and community involvement opportunities during the Superfund process. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry will provide information about the site health assessment process.

The Red Panther Chemical Company Superfund Site is located on 6.5 acres of Normandy and Patton Streets in Clarksdale, Coahoma County, MS. The site is surrounded by a commercial/residential area. The facility was owned and operated by the Red Panther Chemical Company. Liquid and dry herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides were formulated at the facility between 1949 and 1978. The site was previously owned by Coahoma Chemical Company, Riverside Chemical Company, and MFC Services. The facility is currently used as a storage facility for seeds and farm chemicals.
