EPA Awards Over $32,000 to the Jicarilla Apache Tribe to Perform Radon Testing

(Dallas, Texas – April 8, 2010) The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded $32,090 to the Jicarilla Apache Tribe of New Mexico. The Tribe will use the funds to perform radon testing in homes and businesses on Tribal land. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas found in soils, rock, and water throughout the U.S. Radon causes lung cancer, and is a threat to health because it tends to collect in homes and businesses, sometimes to very high concentrations. As a result, radon is the largest source of exposure to naturally occurring radiation.

EPA provides grants to states and tribes to support testing and reducing radon in homes and businesses. With various non-governmental and public health organizations, EPA promotes awareness and reduction of indoor radon. Partners include the American Lung Association, the National Environmental Health Association, the American Society of Home Inspectors, and the National Safety Council.
